Editor's Review:

Deafs.com stands out by far as offering the best range of features.  Deafs.com claims to be the world's first and largest dating site for deaf, ASL (American Sign Language) and hard of hearing singles and friends.  Firstly, there is a choice of reading the site content in either English or German.  As with all the sites you can sign up for free to browse and try out the basic features.

Paid subscription starts at £29.95 for one month which is more expensive than some of the other sites.  However, it is much better value for money than the smaller paying sites.  This fully comprehensive product offers to improve your dating success by 500% by signing up because it will put you in touch with many opportunities to find and interact with other members on-line.

When you sign up, you must wait one working day for your registration to be approved.  We had our first free trial profile disapproved because it lacked content, so this is a good sign that there is a reasonable profile checking procedure going on on the business end.  This means the number of profiles you see in the database is more genuine and not filled up with unused profiles that are inactive or used for scamming purposes.  This is more likely to happen on other sites in this category because some of them do not check profiles at all when you sign up.

Search features are the most sophisticated in this category but are also clear and easy to use.  You can search in the following ways:

  • Quick
  • Advanced / Saved
  • User-name
  • Other's First Date Ideas
  • ASL Fashion Show
  • Verified Members
  • State / ZIP code etc.
  • New Members
  • Recommended / Gold Member
  • Compatible Matches
  • Reverse Matches

This is quite an inventive list of search features.  Most of the products in this category allow features such as quick search, advanced, user-name, and ZIP code.  These are the more functional types of search but need to work well as you will be using them a lot to move around the site.

Deafs.com is the only site to offer CODA (Children Of Deaf Adults) as a profile and search option.

The Deafs.com ASL Fashion show search is a gallery of photos picked out featuring ASL-using members who stand out for being snappy dressers in some way.  It is a fun feature and lightens the mood of on-line dating which could become basically a dull database of information.

The Others' First Date Ideas search allows you to type in a keyword and search for this in members profiles under what they put as their idea for a first date.  This allows members to be inventive and stand out from the crowd whilst also being a useful functional feature to get an idea of the activities your potential date enjoys and make sure they match your own.

When you click on any of the search options there is a bar at the top that shows all the other search options so you can move around searching in different ways without losing your place.  This sounds obvious but does not happen on many websites!  You can also save members' profiles of interest to you.  In the First Date Ideas search you can add location, gender and age.  All search features except for Compatible Matches and Reverse matches are available on the free trial.

Not all sites in this category offer a profile matching service. The matching service offered by Deafs.com works on the details you put on your profile and also the preferences you add for the person you are looking for.  This site offers options for hearing status and sign language skills.  The choices are: deaf, hard of hearing, hearing with experience of sign language and CODA (Children Of Deaf Adults).

Deafs.com is the only site to offer CODA (Children Of Deaf Adults) as a profile and search option. Features like this are very important when offering a product claiming to cater for specific problems such as deafness, but oddly not all the sites in this category provide this service.

Becoming a paying member and accessing the matching service is clearly the way to get the most out of the site.  This is the feature that creates the most activity and increases your chances of meeting the right members.  Also your profile will appear in searches made by other members and so you will be contacted more often.

There is a good support package that comes with your account.  Gold members will have their own account managers.  On your e-mail page there are some helpful tips about how to use your in-box effectively eg. save the support e-mail address to your address book for your own e-mail account and check your SPAM box regularly.

There is also an optional feature that makes your e-mails stand out more by getting a highlighted listing.  This shows to other members that you are serious about using the site and want to get noticed.  This option is only available to gold members and you will need an outstanding photo on your profile.

Deafs.com is also the only site in this category to offer a special mobile version for the site for your cell phone or other mobile Internet device.  All the features and ways of using the site make this a dynamic product that stands out from the crowd. Try deafs.com for free and see who's on-line.
